When to Visit Conakry

Conakry sits on a narrow peninsula jutting into the Atlantic, and that geography shapes everything about its climate. This coastal West African capital has two sharply defined seasons rather than the four you might expect back home. The dry season runs roughly from November through April, when the Harmattan wind blows down from the Sahara and the skies stay reliably clear. The wet season, which tends to announce itself around May and lingers through October, brings torrential downpours that can flood entire neighborhoods within an hour. Temperatures in Conakry stay remarkably consistent year-round, hovering between 22°C (72°F) and 32°C (90°F), so the real question is never whether it will be hot but rather how wet and how humid it will be. What makes Conakry's weather distinctive compared to other tropical capitals is the sheer intensity of the wet season rainfall. June and September can each deliver over 400 millimeters in a single month, the sort of volume that turns unpaved roads to mud and gives the city's drainage system more than it can handle. Humidity climbs into the high eighties and low nineties during these months, which means even the cooler temperatures of July and August at around 28°C (83°F) can feel oppressive. The Atlantic breeze along the Corniche offers some relief. Step a few blocks inland and you will notice the difference immediately. The dry season, by contrast, is Conakry at its most approachable. Skies are wide open, humidity drops to around 69 to 71 percent, and the air takes on a faintly dusty quality from Saharan particulates drifting south. This is when Conakry's beaches along the Iles de Los feel most inviting, when the road to the Fouta Djallon highlands is passable, and when the city's outdoor markets and street food stalls operate without the constant threat of a downpour scattering everyone under the nearest awning.
